Xia's Journey

GRUB-(ilicious) in Bishan Park

on December 12, 2013

Tis’ the Season to be Jolly, Fa La La La La, La La La La…  🙂

Its my favorite month of the year again – a time to celebrate me going one year older (and hopefully wiser!), to celebrate the gathering of family and friends during the Yuletide season and to say goodbye to the old and welcoming of the new year.

With so many excuses good reasons to celebrate, where do we head to ?

Our little red dot has no lack of cafes, bistros, eateries and restaurants. But to find one that is ‘different’ with good food, nice ambience and reasonable pricing in this Yuletide season was a challenge. A timely invitation from Amanda, Cookyn Inc / GRUB sent us to one!

Getting to GRUB @ Bishan Park

Darren and I met up at Bishan Bus Interchange and hopped onto Bus 410W. (You can take Bus 410G as well, but just that it’ll take you on a joyride as it loops in the opposite direction which will cost you an additional 30 minutes to get to the destination.) With Bus 410W, we alighted at the bus-stop after Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery on the left. Just across the road on the right was a public carpark and a bridge leading to the cafe.

Nestled in Nature… I LOVE… : )

Right smack in the middle of Bishan Park 1, GRUB is nestled amongst bushes and trees.

It is the brainchild of Cookyn Inc and they took one year of conceptualising and planning to get this cafe up and running.

Since its official opening on 1 May 2013, the cafe had nothing but excellent reviews.

When I first learned that we would be having a meal in a park, I was not only happy, I was ELATED. Being a huge nature lover, I love dining in parks, gardens and in nature amongst the greens.

Having a cuppa in the park… This is what I call Life… : D

When we got to GRUB, we saw that there is an alfresco seating overseeing the pond and an air-conditioned dining area.

Now, this is my version of a ‘different’ eatery as opposed to the usual dine-outs in a cafe or restaurant at a shopping mall or in our crowded, claustrophobic downtown.

Here, we met up Amanda from Cookyn Inc who had very kindly extended the invitation to us, as well as Fashion and Lifestyle bloggers, Joey and Mag.

GRUB Christmas Set

After some intros and all, we were treated to a yummy Three-Course meal with Appetizers, Mains and a Dessert. Costing SG$30++, this set meal is available from now till Christmas Eve. The cafe will be closed on Christmas Day so that the staffs could spend time with their families and loved ones just like you and I… 🙂

APPETIZERS :

Grub Soup

APPETIZERS OPTION A : Potato Leek Soup with Light Gorgonzola Cream and Bacon Bits

Option A : Potato Leek Soup with Light Gorgonzola Cream and Bacon Bits.

It has been raining quite a bit during this year end and its a good choice to warm up your tummy with this bowl of potato leek soup with light gorgonzola cream and bacon bits.

The rich, velvety, creamy soup simply swims in your mouth.

APPETIZERS OPTION B : Smoked Salmon Salad, dressed in a Cranberry Vinaigrette and topped with Crunchy Toasted Almonds.

Option B : Smoked Salmon Salad, dressed in a Cranberry Vinaigrette and topped with Crunchy Toasted Almonds.

I am usually quite afraid to opt for smoked salmon as most smoked salmon are quite salty from the smoking process.

However, the smoked salmon at GRUB was well done without it being too salty nor having a fishy after-taste.

MAINS :

What is Christmas without Turkey or Ham ? At GRUB, they have both for you to choose from. But then again, you don’t really have a choice of either, because both are so good that you should take both! Thankfully, I went with a pal and we had one each and shared between both of us. I finally understood what “Happiness is Doubled when Shared” meant.

Woww… What a mouthful that was….

But well, the name speaks for itself. But to let you in on a secret ~ the sweet potato mash is a killer…!!

You’ve really got to try it for yourself. It’s my personal favorite!

Did you manage to decipher the caps in the name of this dish ?

MAINS OPTION B : Honey Baked Ham on Homemade Mash served with Apple Sauce and French Beans.

Option B : Honey Baked Ham on Homemade Mash served with Apple Sauce and French Beans.

Sink your teeth into these chunky slices of 100% natural whole leg ham.

It is beautifully complemented with the sweet sour Apple Sauce that refuse to stop seducing your taste buds.

Desserts :

Personally, I always love to end off my meal on a sweet note so that I could smile even in my dreams. Heh Hehh… 🙂

grub sticky date pudding

DESSERTS OPTION A : Homemade Sticky Date Pudding with Burnt Caramel, Vanilla Ice Cream and Toasted Almonds.

Option A : Homemade Sticky Date Pudding with Burnt Caramel, Vanilla Ice Cream and Toasted Almonds.

Initially, the burnt caramel was an ‘accident’, but it turned out to be a ‘good accident’ and a blessing in disguise.

Today, it has gotten so much raves that it has now been ‘promoted’ and available on the regular menu.

OR

Banoffee

DESSERTS OPTION B : Banoffee – Banana with Toffee Trifle with freshly Whipped Vanilla Cream

Option B : Banoffee – Banana with Toffee Trifle with freshly Whipped Vanilla Cream.

Coffee lovers would most probably like this.

But it was a tad too bitter for me as I was not very much a coffee drinker.

Maybe a Bana-cholate may work for me…. Heh heh hehh… : D

Other Yummies at GRUB :

As we continued chatting through the night, we ordered a Churros and more hand crafted Beers.

Joey and Mag were big fans of Churros and could not stop raving about it since we started our meal. When the Churros came, the gals got all excited about it.

Cheerios to Churros… : )

The Churros were crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside.

It came with two dips; a dark chocolate and a tangy creme anglaise.

wOO… I like the Tangy Creme Anglaise. It has this tinge of sweet lemon in it.

In a blink of an eye and before we knew it, the Churros were all gone. Haahaaa… 🙂

What a Churros way to end our night….
