Taiwan Summer Diary 台湾夏日游 – Day 7 : Taipei City

Day 7 : 29 Aug 2013, Thurs, Taipei City > Wu Fen Pu

It was a Free and Easy morning as the two guys went on their own ways and Carren was off to the bookstore. I loitered around not knowing where to go or shop and decided to head back to Taipei Main Station to try the ‘Knife Massage’ that got me intrigued on my first day in Taipei City.

Museum of Alien Studies 外星人博物馆

The name of the shop was “Museum of Alien Studies 外星人博物馆” located at Taipei Main Station near Z8 exit. I found it rather queer as I do not see any extraterrestrial artefacts or any of such at this location. I thought perhaps being a typical Taiwanese shop, it was just a unique shop name that they came up with.

Upon chatting with the staff and some on-line research, I came to know that the Museum is located in a basement in Taichung, Central Taiwan.

The Museum houses a collection of ‘alien artefacts’ and offer divination and ‘knife massage’ services.

At this Taipei Main Station branch, there were only the divination and ‘knife massage’ services.

I was their first customer when I arrived at 11am and was brought to the bed to lie face down.

Like any massage bed, there was a face pit where I could place my face into.

Ms Huang, the masseur, placed a towel over my back and applied some balm on my neck and shoulders before proceeding to ‘chop’ me.

With one stainless steel blunted knife in each hand, she started to pound me gently on the back and shoulders.

The right amount of pressure needs to be applied so as not to ‘kill’ or injure the client.

The repetitive chopping and pounding aims to release the body’s stored energy, promoting better flow of ‘qi’.

The ‘chopping’ provided me with great relief from the aches and pains that I had been suffering from for the past few days. I finally knew how minced meat felt like. Haahaa… 🙂

The ‘knife massage’ costs me NT $220 for a 10 minutes session. See video below.

Wu Fen Pu五分

Our group had arranged to meet up at 1pm, Hou Shan Pi station to visit Wu Fen Pu 五分.

Located at the foot of Sishou Mountain 四獸山, it covers five neighbourhoods in Section 5 of Zhongxiao East Road, east to Songren Road and Zhongpo North Road.

It is the largest garment wholesale market in Taiwan with more than 1,000 shops (18 long lanes) retailing apparels, footwear, bags, accessories etc.

Wu Fen Pu is HUGE….

It was storming when we met up at the train station.

We battled Tropical Storm Trami to cross a couple of streets to arrive at the wholesale market.

Many of the stalls had just opened or were preparing to open when we got there.

There were rows and rows, rows and rows (it is not a duplicate typo error) of shops selling ladies fashion ~ a good 90% of it!

It was a ladies paradise, and I think it bore out my two guy friends who left the market in less than 15 minutes.

Some parts are sheltered whilst some parts will soak you wet.

There were lots of pretty dresses and tops going at NT $100 ~ S$4.30.

It was a total sin not to get anything from here.

I would ‘NOT’ recommend (pun intended) this place to shopaholics or bargain hunters because I am quite certain you will lose your senses and judgement and grab something from every stall… 😀

So many pretty dresses and tops. Such a sin not to buy anything !

As the storm brew, I seized the perfect opportunity to put my new Goretex endorsed MERRELL trekking shoes and Columbia rain jacket to test.

Both passed the test with flying colours.

Despite so, my spirits were as damp as the puddles of rain on the footpath and I left soon after.

Not a single soul in this storm. Poor retailers.

Ginger Tea 黑糖薑母

I was back in Taipei City, hunting around for the cubed Ginger Tea 黑糖薑母that Anthony requested. I asked the ‘aunties’ on the street, I asked information counters personnel, I asked supermarket staffs, I asked practically anybody and everybody in sight that would potentially know the answer. From the feedback and responses that I gathered, the cubed Ginger Tea 黑糖薑母was a refreshment drink sold during winter. And since we are now at the end of summer, it was challenging to find a store that sells it.

A lady recommended visiting the Taipei Main Station ‘souvenir shops’ that sells Local Products all year round.

Hence, I was back at Taipei Main Station, Exit Z1, where I finally found the cubed Ginger Tea 黑糖薑母.

A life-saver Ginger Tea. Thumbs up for this !

As I was down with a chill from the Daylily field, Anthony suggested that I try the Ginger Tea.

I made a glass for myself and drank it while it was piping hot.

The Ginger Tea sent a instant shockwave to my brain and it immediately cleared the pesky drips that I had been having for the last couple of days. The longan and ginger bits in the drink appeased my constant sneezing and were a relief to my breathing difficulties as well.

Thumbs up to my friend for the recommendation which I am hereby recommending it to you too… 🙂
